Special: The American Film Institute
honors an eminent filmmaker.
During his 50 years as a Hollywood
director, William Wyler has been a 12-time
Academy Award nominee and a three-time
winner: in 1942 for "Mrs. Miniver",
in 1946 for "The Best Years of Our Lives"
and in 1959 for "Ben-Hur". Clips from those
films highlight this tribute, and there is
footage as well from other Wyler movies in-
cluding "Wuthering Heights", "The Little Fox-
es", "Roman Holiday", "Jezebel", "Friendly
Persuasion", "The Collector", "Funny Girl".
At press time, celebrities scheduled to
salute Wyler included Henry Fonda, Mrs.
Betty Ford, Audrey Hepburn, Myrna Loy,
Merle Oberon, Walter Pidgeon, James
Stewart and Barbara Streisand (90 min.)

years. Steve Allen, aided by a host of
radio personalities, uses audio record-
ings and film clips to trace the medi-
um's growth, from Marconi's first
wireless transmissions in the late
1890s to the advent of national TV in
the late 1940s. Among those appearing
in person are Jim Jordan (Fibber
McGee), writer Norman Corwin, Edgar
Bergen and Charlie McCarthy, Helen
O'Connell and Hal Peary (the Great

COLLISION COURSE
Special: A historic clash of wills
It is 1950 President Harry S Truman and
Gen Douglas MacArthur are deeply involved
in the first major conflict of the nuclear
age-the Korean War, pitting UN forces in
South Korea against the invading Communist
forces of North Korea and Red China.
The charismatic MacArthur commander of
UN forces, believes he must push for a deci-
sive victory by fighting the Communists on
their own ground. The determined Truman
seeks to avoid an aggressive act that might
spark retaliation from Russia.
E.G. Marshall plays Truman and Henry
Fonda is MacArthur in this play, a blend of
fact and speculation that dramatizes their
confrontation over the war and their ulti-
mate showdown, when the President relieved
the general of his command in April 1951.

SUDDENLY AN EAGLE
Special: Retracing the events that led to the
shot heard round the world.
Lee J. Cobb and British actor Kenneth Griffith
alternate as on-screen narrators in this docu-
mentary, which places them in historical settings
and occasionally on opposite sides of the Atlantic
to tell how and why the American colonies re-
belled against England.
It's a familiar story made vivid, in part, by the
locales themselves: Windsor Castle; colonial
Williamsburg, Va., Carpenter's Hall in Philadel-
phia (site of the First Continental Congress), and
Lexington and Concord, Mass., where the War of
Independence began.
But it's the lesser-known details in the story
that set this hour apart. For example George
Washington's cautious advice that a call to arms
"should be the last resort", William Pitt's sym-
pathy for the colonists' cause, and John Adams
defense of British troops on trial for the Boston
Massacre (60 min.)

A HISTORY OF AMERICAN TECHNOLOGY
Special: Surveying 200 years of inventions-
from the cotton gin to the computer.
Raymond Burr and James Burke (of the BBC)
are the co-hosts for this blend of whimsical
commentary, animation, song-and-dance rou-
tines and on-location segments that show how
inventions helped give birth to the Nation.
Included: how the McCormick reaper, the
Coll 45 and the railroad contributed to west-
ward expansion; how entrepreneurs like
Thomas Edison, who popularized Alexander
Graham Bell's telephone (pictured), and Henry
Ford, whose original assembly line is visited,
spurred the development of mass production;
and how the discovery of nylon enlarged the
role of research in product development.
The report also cites examples of "disillu-
sionment with American ingenuity: the decline
of the space program and the growing debate
over nuclear power. (2 hrs.)
