Debut: "Civilisation's" Kenneth Clark explores
the struggle between classicism and romantic-
ism in art from the mid-18th through the
early-19th centuries.
This hour serves as an introduction to the
15-week series; subsequent half-hour shows
will examine artists and their work in detail.
Among the works viewed tonight: David's
"Death of Marat" (pictured), an emotional polit-
ical painting handled with the classic discipline
of the Greco-Roman ideal; Goya's "The Third
of May, 1808," capturing the horrors of the
Napoleonic invasion in Spain; and three paint-
ings ("The Three Massacres") by Delacroix
who epitomized "the frenzied, Dionysiac side
of the romantic movement.
Clark also discusses the survival of classi-
cism in the work of Ingres; artists' renewed in-
terest in nature, evident in the paintings of
Turner and Constable; and the sculptures of
Rodin. For a historical perspective of the Ro-
mantic Rebellion, see page 20. (60 min.)
