- "Death of Marat" (pictured), an emotional polit-
- ical painting handled with the classic discipline
- of the Greco-Roman ideal; Goya's "The Third
- of May, 1808," capturing the horrors of the
- Napoleonic invasion in Spain; and three paint-
- ings ("The Three Massacres") by Delacroix
- who epitomized "the frenzied, Dionysiac side
- of the romantic movement

- cism in the work of Ingres; artists' renewed in-
- terest in nature, evident in the paintings of
