Hildegarde is still incomparable
By Eleanor Hart

MIAMI BEACH — At
72, Hildegarde is still
incomparable.
The 16-button gloves,
the elegant evening
gowns, the lilting
"Darling, Je Vous Aime
Beaucoup," her personal
signature for three gen-
erations, remain the
same.
At an age indigene to
Medicare and Social Sec-
urity, the blonde char-
meuse from Wisconsin,
who has captivated
kings, presidents, mil-
lionaires and thousands
of other fans, goes on
singing.
"I love you more today
than yesterday, but darl-
ing, not as much as
tomorrow..." The strain
fills the empty Beach
Theater, where she was
appearing in two shows a
day for one week.
Hildegarde's (shown in 'Wa) elegant evening gowns and lil-
ting "Darling, Je Vous Aime Beaucoup" are still trademark.
"I'm indestructible, in-
exhaustible, indefatiga-
ble (except when she
doesn't get a good night's
sleep), irreplaceable and,
as I tell my audiences,
inexcusable," she laughs
merrily.
And of course, incom-
parable, the adjective a
press agent hung on her
more than 30 years ago.
"He told Walter Winchell
that when he printed my
name, he must put
'incomparable' in front
of it. That is how it
happened, and it has
stuck to this day."
Born Hildegarde Loret-
ta Sell in Adell, Wis.,
Feb. 1, 1906, into a musi-
cal family (her parents
and two sisters played
and sang), she always
wanted to be in show
business. "I had the
drive and they didn't,"
she says of her sisters.
Concert Pianist
She first aspired to be a
concert pianist and
studied at Marquette
Conservatory (Ill.) for
awhile, then went into
vaudeville in 1926 with
comedian Gus Edwards.
