  • When CBS Radio started its Mystery Theater more than two years ago, the undertaking was a serious gamble
  • It turned into a successful venture, however. Salt Lake's RMT, especially, has scored high ratings with spine-tingling dramas which have starred top Broadway and TV stars
  • Now the network is preparing something else different. It will broadcast seven adaptations of Shakespeare plays as Mystery Theater offerings, part 13 through 25
  • This means quite an editing job for the man who will adapt the dramas to radio. He is Ian Martin, a college-born, New York-raised veteran of more than 20 years of acting and writing for radio
  • He will be risking the wrath of Shakespeare purists in his adaptations. The Shakespeare dramas will not be presented under their original titles. The old lines will remain intact, but the stories were cut to 35 minutes for the time limit of the program. Also, parts of the Shakespeare dialogue have been rewritten
  • The first show will be titled "Murder Most Foul," which is more familiar as "Macbeth." The second drama, "Julius Caesar," will be called "The Assassination," and "Hamlet" will be presented as Long Live the King, the King is Dead
  • Martin said that although the radio plays will be adaptations, "all the familiar quotes are in there. So they won't be exact words -- and the actors might lump at this -- but basically it's all right." He said that the stories are good and should be heard. "While I have the profoundest respect for Shakespeare," Martin said, "he is entitled to be understood. That is what I will try to do with the adaptations."
