The seeds of the search are sown during interviews that Haley, on magazine assignments, conducts with Malcolm X (Al Freeman Jr.), spokesman for the Black Muslims and with American Nazi Party leader George Lincoln Rockwell (Marlon Brando), who holds Haley at gunpoint during their talk. Rockwell's inflammatory remarks and Malcolm's searing rhetoric imbue Haley with a sense of racial pride and family tradition which he confides to his cousin "Wouldn't it be a bang," Haley says, "to go back and find the old guy himself—the old ghost from all those summer evenings here on this porch... [Kunta] Kinte. To follow him all the way back to prove he was real."
