An ambitious three-hour biography of the French leader who "established and incarnated, in an almost mystical way, the glory of France." "Men are great," Charles de Gaulle (1890-1970) wrote, "only if they are determined to be so." De Gaulle's greatest triumph began with heroic defiance: his calls for resistance and the formation of Free French forces following the fall of his country to the Nazis in 1940. The program chronicles the war years, his emotional return to Paris in 1944, and his return to power in 1959. That began a stormy final decade marked by student violence, labor strife and De Gaulle's opposition, narrator Gene Golusha notes, to superpower "domination." (3 hrs.)
