ANASTASIA: THE MYSTERY OF ANNA 12/7/86
A lavishly produced drama based on the life of Anna Anderson (played by Amy Irving), the enigmatic woman claiming to be Anastasia Romanov—the sole survivor of the 1918 execution of Russia's royal family.
This "Anastasia" is no remake of the 1956 Ingrid Bergman vehicle, which, according to screenwriter James Goldman ("Nicholas and Alexandra") "involves characters that weren't real and situations that never happened. The basic events that happen in our show happened in [Anna's] life."
What happens to Anna begins here in 1920 in a Berlin asylum. Destitute and delirious, she suddenly identifies herself as Princess Anastasia and painfully describes her escape from the Bolsheviks. Finding her "convincing," a Romanov cousin named Prince Erich (Jan Niklas) seeks to help her "jog some memories loose" that would validate her and satisfy the skeptical Romanovs in exile.
