and Michael Tucker star, with Hume Cronyn, Richard
Dysart, Hal Holbrook, Barnard Hughes, John McMar-
tin and David Ogden Stiers in the powerful saga of the
Manhattan Project and the race to develop the atomic
bomb. The story begins in Berlin in 1933 and pro-
gresses to the time when the U.S. secretly organized
to defeat the Germans in the race to discover the
ultimate weapon and thereby win World War II.
Emmy-winner Joseph Sargent directs.

A scenario for nuclear catastrophe.
Based on an incident that occurred near Little Rock, Ark., in
1960, this 1988 TV-movie is set in 1952 at a fictitious Air
Force installation in Texas that houses Titan II ICBMs (which
are now no longer in service). Each of these missiles is
armed with a nuclear warhead 750 times more powerful than
the A-bomb dropped on Hiroshima.

During a routine maintenance check, an accident punctures
a missile fuel tank in Silo 7. While Air Force personnel scurry
to contain the damage, panic spreads in the neighboring com-
munity, where citizens have been up in arms before over
base safety procedures. Meanwhile, at Strategic Air Com-
mand headquarters, the brass fear most what they said could
never happen: an explosion that could detonate the warhead.

SILKWOOD (1976)
The 1976 lawsuit filed by Karen Silkwood's parents
against the Kerr-McGee company—accusing the own-
ers of the Oklahoma plutonium plant of violating their
daughter's civil rights and causing her personal injury
due to exposure to radioactive materials—is still
pending in the courts. But whatever the final judg-
ment, there will always be an aura of mystery sur-
rounding Silkwood's death in a 1974 car crash.

Mike Nichols' 1983 film dramatizes events leading
up to the fatal accident. Oscar nominee Meryl Streep
portrays Silkwood as a sometimes crude but persist-
ent woman determined to help her union fight for bet-
ter safety conditions at the plant. In the film, this
activism triggers animosity between Silkwood and
management and co-workers—and strains her rela-
tionships with her lover Drew (Kurt Russell) and her
friend Dolly (Oscar nominee Cher).

Rated R for strong language, adult themes and sex-
