## HEADING: DANCING
## LEFT COLUMN
324. THE MAGIC OF DANCE: (1982)
Dame Margot Fonteyn, considered by many
the "prima ballerina assoluta," has per-
formed with some of the greatest dancers in
the world, including Nureyev and Baryshni-
kov. Last week, she made her debut as host
of The Magic of Dance.

"The inspiration for dance moves around in
continuous ebb and flow," says hostess Mar-
got Fonteyn, who follows a choreographic
line that begins with French ballet masters in
Russia in the 19th century and ends with an
American artist, George Balanchine, who is
steeped in the Russian tradition.

Along the way, Fonteyn considers such in-
fluential choreographers as Charles Didelot
(1767-1836), a French innovator who literally
brought the St. Petersburg Ballet to new
heights by attaching wires to his soaring
dancers; Marius Petipa (1819-1910), the
Frenchman whose works remain a staple of
Soviet ballet; and Michel Fokine (1880-1942),
who—under the aegis of impresario Serge
Diaghilev—brought the ballets of Russia to
the world.

Fonteyn also traces the career of the
legendary Anna Pavlova (1881-1931) and
shows rare clips of the ballerina filmed at the
One legendary ballerina (Margot Fonteyn)
holding the slipper of another (Pavlova)
urging of Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pick-
ford. Also included: Mikhail Baryshnikov in
Fokine's "Petrouchka," Yoko Morishita and
Tetsutaro Shimizu in Petipa's "Don Quixote,"
and Vyryan Lorraine and Desmond Kelly in
Balanchine's "Apollo." (60 min.)
