John Aaron Bennett.
"I'LL FLY AWAY" (1991). Sam Waterston stars as a
principled Southern lawyer whose family and black
housekeeper are struck by the tremors of changing
times in the South of the late 1950s. Features Regina
Taylor, Kathryn Harold. Premieres as a weekly series.

MASTER
MAGICIAN
As election day nears, John Morgan (John Aaron
Bennett) plans a post-victory magic show, but
Forrest (Sam Waterston) isn't sure he can pull a
win out of his hat in his race for attorney general.
He's facing a blackmail threat from a drunken Ty-
ler (Scott Paulin). Meanwhile, Lilly's determina-
tion to vote remains unabated, even after her
faith is tested by the opposition of her minister
(James McEachin). But discrimination at the poll-
ing place makes that step forward seem more
like an illusion. Lilly: Regina Taylor. Lake: Ed
Grady. Sykes: Michael Whaley. Donna Kay:
Meredith Brasher. Christina: Kathryn Harold.
Francie: Ashlee Levitch. (60 min.)
I'll Fly Away: Regina Taylor,
Dorian Harewood.

1325. I'LL FLY AWAY
From 1120/92 thru 10/11/93
(Including Flying away from NBC to
PBS).
I'll Fly Away: Then and Now (Mon., PBS)—The
good news for fans of I'll Fly
Away: Thanks to PBS, the
beloved series returns for
a finale, with Lilly (Regina
Taylor) recalling the strug-
gle for civil rights in the '60s
for her '90s grandson. The
show is politically correct
to a fault (with humorous
homeless people) and it's
obviously plotted—but still,
it's touching. And the good
news for all of us: PBS
trying to preserve and pro-
mote American television.
My score: 7
1326. UNFORGETTABLE NAT KING COLE.
BBC Documentary. 12/2/90
Nat "King" Cole
♦ How smooth can a singer
be? Listen to Nat "King"
Cole for the answer. Gliding
through a sentimental tune
like "Star Dust," accompa-
nied by a string orchestra,
his lighter-than-air baritone
blooms effortlessly. Cole may
have started out as a charm-
ing cocktail-lounge pianist
with a delicate touch, but he
developed into a master bal-
ladeer. Something extraor-
dinary happened whenever
he abandoned his spry jazz for love songs. By letting his
smoky voice breathe easy passion, he made us fall head over
heels for the idea of love.
