Debut: John Lithgow hosts an ambitious 10-part
series on the history of film in America. The first
hour examines how some directors developed
their movies by emphasizing strong narrative
rather than relying on flashy technique, while oth-
ers such as Howard Hawks and Orson Welles in-
fused their work with their own distinctive style.
Clips are shown from three films that drew their
power from their plot: "Casablanca," "A Place in
the Sun" and "Scarface." The second hour
traces the phenomenon of stardom and the rise
of the studios. Included are comments from in-
dustry experts and a generous sampling of clips.

erick moviemakers who achieved suc-
cess without studio backing.

In the engrossing profile Elia Kazan: A
Director's Journey, the filmmaker (whose
credits include such classics as "On the
Waterfront" and "A Streetcar Named De-
sire") shares personal anecdotes about
Marlon Brando, Tennessee Williams and
others. Kazan was "a dominant creative

"Submitted for your approval..." A profile of Rod
Serling (1924-75) combines reminiscences from
family members and colleagues with clips from the
eerie, classic sci-fi series The Twilight Zone and
other career highlights, including "Requiem for a
Heavyweight," "Patterns" and "The Comedian."
Director John Frankenheimer notes, "[Serling]
and other writers of his time—TV's golden age of
live productions—defined 'an American art that'
will never be again' in the 1950s. Among others
recalling Serling are his widow Carol, daughters
Jodi and Anne, as well as various associates and
actors, including Jack Klugman. Another high
point: readings from Serling's memoirs. (1:30)
