Debut: Ken Burns (The Civil War) produced this gripping series that chronicles the history of the West. Using lush cinematography, director Stephen Ives artfully draws on paintings, photographs and first-person accounts to depict life in the region. The series opens with the arrival of Europeans in the 16th century, early efforts to conquer native peoples as well as Lewis and Clark's expedition to map the vast region. Peter Coyote narrates; Matthew Broderick, Ossie Davis, Jason Robards, Gary Sinise and Jimmy Smits are among those reading from letters, diaries and other archival materials. (1:30)
