It happens every year about this time—a TV-movie that wouldn't make you think twice comes out of nowhere to score impressive ratings. Two years ago, it was "Facts of Life Down Under." Last year, we had "Eight Is Enough: A Family Reunion" (if outpulled a World Series game). Our candidate for this year is "Lady Mobster," which, despite its title, deals with a corporate lawyer taking on the Mob rather than some kind of criminal Godmother. The script, direction and acting are run-of-the-mill. What makes this one a candidate for ratings heaven is its star: Susan Lucci. All My Children's vixenish Erica has been featured in three prior made-for-TV movies, "Invitation to Hell," "Mafia Princess" and "Haunted by Her Past," and all of them have been major ratings successes. Movie: Over the years, Sidney Sheldon has become a brand name for a partic- ular kind of popular novel: the damsel-in-distress with an exotic background story. His latest monster best seller, "Windmills of the Gods," comes to TV this week in a two-part adaptation that stars Jaclyn Smith as the damsel and features international terrorism as the distress. Smith plays a University of Kansas political-science professor tapped by the President to become the new detente-minded U.S. am- bassador to socialist Romania. Her problem: a super-secret and super-powerful gang of international bad guys from both sides of the Iron Curtain who will stop at nothing to break up any East-West rapprochement. THE BOURNE IDENTITY. 5/8/88 THE BOURNE IDENTITY, PART I Richard Chamberlain and Jaclyn Smith star in this complex thriller, which unfolds at the fast-paced clip of James Bond films while weaving suspense in the style of Hitchcock. Adapted from Robert Ludlum's novel and filmed in Europe, the two-part 1988 TV movie opens in a small French coastal village, where a man (Chamberlain) has washed ashore. The stranger has been shot several times and suffers from amnesia. He is treated by a kindly, alcoholic doctor (Denholm Elliott), who confronts his patient with unsettling clues to his identity: his facial features have undergone extensive recon- struction, and a piece of microfilm, surgically implanted in his hip, holds the number of an account in a Zurich bank. Using a forged passport, the amnesiac travels to Zurich and checks into a first-class hotel. With an air of secrecy, the register addresses him as Jason Bourne—the wealthy Ja- son Bourne investigating the bank lead (Bourne is ambushed) by gunmen, whom he eludes by taking a hostage economist, Marie St. Jacques (Smith). Their escape propels them into labyrinthine intrigue involving a U.S. intelligence mission, an assassin—and the secret of Bourne's true identity.
