The Indian: No small role for Litefoot.
THE INDIAN IN THE (1995)
CUPBOARD This delightful fan-
tasy for kids, adapted from a
best-selling British novel, was
trampled by bigger titles during
the summer rush. But it's a
well-produced charmer that
shouldn't be overlooked this
time around. Omri (Hal Scardi-
no) is a 9-year-old whose older
brother gives him an old cup-
board for his birthday that
turns out to have magical quali-
ties. When he puts his toys inside, they come to life,
and his adventures with them teach him some lessons
about history and friendship. The rap singer Litefoot
does a fine job as The Indian, and David Keith is excel-
lent as a rowdy cowboy. With Lindsay Crouse and
Richard Jenkins. (PG; 1:37; Columbia TriStar, CC)

Meriwether Lewis William Clark
A fine two-part study by Ken Burns chronicles
America's "first official exploration into un-
known spaces." In 1804, Thomas Jefferson com-
missioned Meriwether Lewis to explore the Mis-
souri River and lands West—an expedition
Jefferson hoped would "offer the most direct and
practicable water communication across this
continent for the purposes of commerce." Lewis
recruited Army buddy William Clark and nearly
four dozen "stout, healthy, unmarried" frontiers-
men. Readings from diaries and comments from
historians follow the two-and-a-half-year trek—
during which the team encountered "cold, hun-
ger, danger and wonder beyond belief." (2:00)
