JACK THE RIPPER, PART 1
Eschewing the sensational, the two-part (1988
TV-movie turns one of history's most notorious
serial-crime stories into an intriguing psychologi-
cal murder mystery.
In 1888 London, a killer who became known as
Jack the Ripper brutally sawe five prostitutes in
the lawless East End. Producer-director-writer
David Wickes filmed on location and relied on
government files and interviews with criminolo-
gists and Scotland Yard officers to reconstruct
the slayings and the manhunt for the murderer.
Michael Caine portrays Scotland Yard inspec-
tor Frederick Abberline, the hard-boiled, hard-
driving detective assigned to the case. In his
investigation, Abberline uncovers surprising
leads that seem to implicate members of the po-
lice, American actor Richard Mansfield (Armand
Assante), a British clairvoyant (Ken Bones)—and
even the royal family.

2054. FRIDAY THE 13TH. THE SERIES.
At the beginning of each episode we are
warned: "Lewis Vendredi made a deal
with the devil to sell cursed antiques,
but he broke the pact and it cost him
his soul. Now his niece Micki and her
cousin Ryan have inherited the store and
with it the curse. Now they must get every-
thing back and the real terror begins."
A much more real terror is the prospect
of more mindless horror movies being
adapted as television series. As the first
of its ilk, Friday the 13th: The Series con-
sists chiefly of low-key lighting, eerie mu-
sic and lots of gore. The stories are me-
chanical, the suspense artificial, the dia-
logue stilted, the acting heavy-handed,
the direction routine.
One week the cursed antique was an
old camera with a feature Kodak better
not consider: if you take a picture of
someone with this camera and develop
the negative, a complete duplicate of that
person appears (such a ghostly double
is called a doppelgänger) and lives until
the negative is destroyed. If, however,
the negative is not destroyed within five
hours, the original person disappears and
the duplicate takes his place.
A television anchorman with slipping
ratings uses the camera to duplicate him-
self, then sends his doppelgänger out
to slash victims with a machete (machetes
give good blood). The anchorman then
has terrific local stories to report exclu-
sively on his broadcasts, which is not too
far-fetched considering what some sta-
tions do during ratings-sweeps weeks.
Ryan finally catches up with the anchor-
man and gets the negative. After a lot
of double-dealing, Ryan stabs the dop-
pelsänger but loses the negative to him. The dop-
pelsänger loses some green blood, but the
five hours are up and the blow-dried
and shocked anchorman disappears.
The duplicate starts bleeding nice red
blood and he happily shouts, "I'm alive!"
just before he expires from the stab wound.
Micki is played by Robey, a rock star
and model who once, in a burst of pres-
cience, organized a band called Louise
and the Creeps. Cousin Ryan is John
D. LeMay. A press release reveals that
on the day of LeMay's audition for the
role, "my horoscope said that anything I
wanted would be mine. Is it any wonder
I'm here in Toronto, in a show called
Friday the 13th?"
Another episode was a mishmash about
a nasty gangster, an aging and somewhat
nutty ex-policeman, Micki's old boyfriend,
some counterfeit money and, as the miss-
ing antique, an old sheriff's badge. The
badge has the ability to inflict excruciat-
ing—and finally fatal—pain when touched
to someone's chest. The ex-cop gets the
badge and is intent on touching the gang-
ster with it. Micki's old boyfriend turns
up. Seems he's in town to sell counterfeit
money to the gangster. It all winds up
with the ex-cop killing several people with
the badge and the gangster and his cro-
nies murdering several people with guns,
including the boyfriend (an FBI agent, it
turns out) and the ex-cop—who manages
with his last twitch to touch the badge
to the gangster. Ryan and Micki recover
the badge and still another cursed anti-
que is taken out of circulation.
Horror's the word, all right.
