    Series
  • THE BRADY BUNCH MOVIE. (1995)
'The Brady Dunch Movie' is —well, golly, it's groovy Some big-screen versions of classic TV shows have been less than wonderful, so I expected to hate every minute of The Brady Dunch Movie. Well, guess what? It's good fun. The script is clever and spoofy, Betty Thomas's direction is on target, and you'll marvel at the uncanny resemblance of the cast to the original players. What makes it all work, though, is the funny contrast: These perky, polyester '70s Bradys live in 1995 Los Angeles, where freeway signs warn of gang wars, quake damage toxic spray, and killer bees (the last sign, of course, says, "Have a nice day"). The Bradys are amusingly oblivious to it all and remain relentlessly wholesome—which, in this day and age, makes them seem like aliens from the planet Dork. What's remarkable is that you'll be rooting for 'em anyway. Shelley Long and Gary Cole star as Carol and Mike Brady; special standouts among the kids are Christine Taylor as perfect Marcia and Jennifer Elise Cox as jealous Jan. (PG-13 1:28 Paramount CC)

THE BRADY BUNCH MOVIE. (1995)
'The Brady Dunch Movie' is
—well, golly, it's groovy
Some big-screen versions of classic TV
shows have been less than wonderful, so
I expected to hate every minute of The
Brady Dunch Movie. Well, guess what? It's
good fun. The script is clever and spoofy,
Betty Thomas's direction is on target,
and you'll marvel at the uncanny ressem-
blance of the cast to the original players.
What makes it all work, though, is the
funny contrast: These perky, polyester
'70s Bradys live in 1995 Los Angeles,
where freeway signs warn of gang wars,
quake damage toxic spray, and killer
bees (the last sign, of course, says, "Have
a nice day"). The Bradys are amusingly
oblivious to it all and remain relentlessly
wholesome—which, in this day and age,
makes them seem like aliens from the
planet Dork. What's remarkable is that
you'll be rooting for 'em anyway. Shelley
Long and Gary Cole star as Carol and
Mike Brady; special standouts among the
kids are Christine Taylor as perfect Mar-
cia and Jennifer Elise Cox as jealous Jan.
