Mary Tyler Moore and Bernadette Peters strike a new vein
with emotional depth in a heavily mined topic: the "disease-
of-the-week" TV-movie.
Peters plays Jane Murray, an airline executive with no im-
mediate family who is stricken with a virulent type of cancer
that is probably terminal. To ease her anguish, Jane hesi-
tantly seeks help from a compassionate psychologist
named Wendy Allen (Moore).
In the course of therapy, the two women develop a sym-
biotic relationship tied to haunted pasts. But while Jane be-
gins to find an inner peace, Wendy is increasingly troubled.
As she puts it, "I have to fight to control myself so that she
doesn't see how scared I am. Scared of not being able to
help her... losing her."
This 1990 TV-movie was written by Emmy winner David
W. Rintels ("Day One") and directed by Emmy winner John
Erman ("Who Will Love My Children?"). (2 hrs.)

This fact-based drama explores the right-to-die
issue with candor and compassion.
"Last Wish" was adapted from a book by
newswoman Betty Robin, who fought and won
her own battle with cancer, dramatized in a 1978
TV-movie called "First You Cry." But this 1992
TV-movie revolves around the tormented struggle
of Robin's septuagenarian mother, Ida, who is
suddenly stricken with a more virulent form of the
disease.
Maureen Stapleton gives a fine performance
as Ida, a down-to-earth, courageous woman
whose suffering tears at the heart of her daugh-
ter, Betty (Patty Duke), and culminates in a
wrenching decision.
Adapted by Jerome Kass, who wrote "Queen
of the Stardust Ballroom" as a TV vehicle for
Stapleton in 1975; directed by Jeff Bleckner
("Concealed Enemies"). (2 hrs.)

A poignant search for answers to the
tragic riddle behind the suicide of a
teen-ager.
Earlier this month, CBS covered the
subject in a "Schoolbreak Special"
drama exploring the psychological dis-
tress that culminated in a youth's sui-
cide. This 1984 TV-movie does that as
well, but here the focus is more on the
victim's family and friends in the after-
math of the tragedy.
At first, though, the automobile death
of 17-year-old Skip Lewis (Chad Lowe)
is attributed to a freakish accident. But
as clues begin to surface suggesting
that Skip may have taken his own life,
his mother (Marlette Hartley) and
younger sister (Dana Hill) begin a
search for the truth—a truth that's too
painful for Skip's dad (Howard Hesse-
man) to face. Meanwhile, Skip's best
friend Ken (Charlie Sheen) is also going
through an emotional wringer: he
thinks he could have prevented Skip's
suicide.

SURVIVING. 2/10/85
An excellent cast addresses the subject of
teen-age suicide with insight and compas-
sion in this 1985 "ABC Theater" movie.
Actually, "Surviving" is two films in one.
The first part tells how identity crises and
parental pressures precipitate a suicide pact
between two smitten 16-year-olds from up-
per-middle-class families: an intellectual boy
named Rick (Zach Galligan) and Lonnie
(Molly Ringwald), a troubled girl who had
tried to kill herself once before.
The second part of the movie explores the
emotional impact of the actual suicides on
Rick's parents, David (Len Cariou) and Tina
(Ellen Burstyn); and on Lonnie's folks, Har-
vey (Paul Sorvino) and Lois (Marsha Mason).
Overcome with grief and feelings of guilt,
both couples now also find that the trag-
edies have unearthed deep-rooted domestic
problems.
