When The Phil Donahue Show began in Dayton, Ohio, on Nov. 6, 1967, the host was a bit nervous; his hair was a great deal darker and his first guest--appropriately controversial--was atheist Madalyn Murray O'Hair. Memorable clips from nearly 6000 Donahue programs that followed highlight this tribute, which covers such topics as show business, politics, religion, sex, racism and--most effectively--AIDS. The salute also includes appearances by... Some guests appear in a sketch; others introduce clips and read excerpts of "letters to Donahue." Just how fast is Donahue on his feet? Clues are provided in his performance of "Me and My Shadow" with members of the National Dance Institute (a number choreographed by Jacques D'Amboe). Also, Saturday Night Live's Phil Hartman does his Donahue impression and there are taped messages from Joan Rivers and Donahue's wife, Mario Thomas. (2 hrs.)
