Madonna Carson Countdown: Two weeks and ticking... close up TONIGHT 10:35 PM 2 A FAREWELL PARTY FOR JOHNNY CARSON After a nearly 30-year reign, the King of Late-Night Television abdicates the throne of The Tonight Show. Naturally, it's time for memories, which Johnny Carson is expected to share with Ed McMahon, who first learned with Carson in 1958 on the daytime game show Who Do You Trust?; and Doc Severinsen, who was a trumpeter with the Tonight band (led by Skitch Henderson) when Johnny made his debut on Oct. 1, 1962. This evening, no guests are expected. And, al- though there will be some clips from past shows, this will not be one of those anni- versary retrospectives. The idea is to keep things simple and let Carson ex- press his feelings about what it's been like doing the show and offer his thanks to the people who have been part of it through the years—those who have been be- hind the scenes as well as the ones we have seen on camera. There will be performers, staff members, stagehands and their families in the studio audience. "Johnny doesn't want it to be a big deal," says producer Jeff Sizling, "but of course it will be. It will be pretty intense." (60 min.) Fond farewell. no more to come.
