The Democrat and the Dictator. Franklin D. Roosevelt Adolf Hitler. "I can't look at this century," says host Bill Moyers, "without thinking that the collision between the ideas of Adolf Hitler and Franklin Roosevelt represented its greatest turning point." The World War II adversaries were, Moyers continues, "gladiators of light and darkness in a worldwide morality play." Combining archival footage, stills and radio tapes with Moyers' historical analysis, this report (which first aired on CBS Cable in September 1982) examines the divergent backgrounds and philosophies of Hitler and Roosevelt, both of whom led their nations from 1933 until their deaths—18 days apart—in April 1945. The "powerful gift" that FDR and Hitler shared, says Moyers, was a "clear, unmistakable voice, audible to the multitudes." The gift, demonstrated by FDR in his "fireside chats," gave new hope to Depression-era America. Across the Atlantic, meanwhile, Hitler was exploiting Germany's instability with fiery nationalistic oratory that preached Aryan supremacy.
