## HEADING: Science Fiction

927. The Hitch Hiker's Guide
to the Galaxy (BBC) (1981)
Debut thru Episode # 7.
CBS NEWS SPECIAL "1984"REVISITED 6/7/83
"In the end the Party would announce that two and two made
five, and you would have to believe it. The heresy of heresies
was common sense. And what was terrifying was not that they
would kill you for thinking otherwise, but that they might be
right."
—George Orwell's "1984"

It was in 1948 that Orwell created a harrowing and grimly satir-
ic vision of a soulless society where truth is twisted, privacy is
nonexistent and emotional attachments and loyalties to anyone
but the Party can result in punishment. His world "of trampling
and being trampled upon"—ruled over by the ever-watchful Big
Brother—is not a prophecy of things to come, but a warning
about personal alienation and the loss of individuality in a
totalitarian state.

How relevant is "1984" in 1983? Correspondent Walter Cron-
kite tries to answer that in this report. He briefly profiles the
English author and compares some of the book's themes (like
the "altering" of historical records and "the intoxication of
power") with present-day oppression and propaganda in vari-
ous parts of the world. In a lighter segment, Cronkite finds
echoes of Orwellian "doublethink" in some contemporary
political comments. (60 min.)
