## HEADING: STAR TREK DEEP SPACE NINE ## LEFT COLUMN Deep Space Nine Syndicated (check local listings) What a contrast: First I watched the sixth "Star Trek" movie, a hotbed of overact- ing—no, hyperacting—by a sorry lot of pudgy, waxy men, some of whom have little better to do these days than hawk Star Trek souvenirs on home-shopping shows. Then I watched Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, the spinoff's spinoff that could prove to be the best Trek of all—yes, even better than Star Trek itself. The original Star Trek remains a classic; equally cosmic and camp, genius in its own right. Take, for example, the episode about two alien races— one colored black-and- white, the other white- and-black—who were fueled by hate and unable to live in peace. That Trek reflected our troubled- though-optimistic, post-Camelot, melt- ing-pot '60s. Deep Space Nine is the first show of the Clinton '90s. It reflects a new and ever world striving to overcome dimin- d expectations. Communism may be dead, but its scars still burn. Ethnic hat- reds are proving to be a worse threat to peace than ideologies. Economies every- where are shifting on sand. And so, on an outpost called Deep Space Nine—tomor- row's Moscow, Baghdad, or Sarajevo— Avery Brooks plays a Starfleet comman- der helping Bajorans (usually good guys) rebuild a space station that had been oc- cupied, trashed, then abandoned by Cardassians (usually bad guys). Around a run-down shopping mall (a nice '90s touch), many races coexist in a testy truce held together by a thin economy. In this uncertain setting, commander and crew try to revitalize a suppressed reli- gion, then battle a terrorist who pits old loyalties against new, then hunt a man who murders his own clone, then cure a virus. Neat plots for a neat cast. Brooks is a mighty presence; this could be his breakout role (if he avoids Trekker typecast- ing and home-shopping). Terry Farrell is cool and alluring as a wise old beast wearing a beautiful woman's body. Armin Shimerman has a wonder- fully rodenty quality as Quark the casino owner, the Donald Trump of Deep Space. This cast is at least as strong as Star Trek: The Next Genera- tion's. But this series is far stronger, for it is more than just a spinoff—it's a wholly new show with its own vision and its own messages for our new world. The worst sci-fi—Space Rangers— simplifies life in pompous platitudes, meaningless jargon, and overpowered gadgets. The best sci-fi—like Star Trek and Deep Space Nine—entertains us, wows us, then invites us, without being pushy about it, to contemplate our fate on Earth and our place in the universe.
