REVIEW OF: The Killing Fields.
Sam Waterston and Haing S. Ngor
This gripping 1984 account of a real-life friendship in
war-torn Cambodia won three Oscars, including one
for first-time actor Haing S. Ngor.
The film opens in 1972. New York Times corre-
spondent Sydney Schanberg (Sam Waterston) and
his guide and interpreter Dith Pran (Ngor) have
become inseparable companions in the course of cov-
ering the fighting between the U.S.-endorsed Lon Nol
regime and the Communist Khmer Rouge. As the de-
fenses of Phnom Penh crumble, both men also come
to depend on one another for survival.
On one occasion, it takes some fast talking by Dith
Pran to save Schanberg from a firing squad. And with
increasing evidence of Khmer genocide, and an order
expelling foreign journalists, it's Dith Pran's life that's
in jeopardy-unless Schanberg and his colleagues
can smuggle him out with them.
Directed by Roland Joffe ("The Mission"). Al: John
Malikovich. Swan: Julian Sands. Military Attache:
Craig T. Nelson. U.S. Consul: Spalding Grey. Dr.
Sunoeval: Athol Fugard. (3 hrs.)
