THE BOAT. (Das Boot) (1981)
(Dubbed in English) Color.
THE BOAT (DAS BOOT). Jurgen Prochnow, Herbert Grönemeyer.
Factual, gripping film follows the daring patrol of U-96, one of the
deadly German U-boats known as "the grey wolves." One of the
most successful films in the history of the German cinema.
The Boat, at about $12 million the
most expensive German film to come
our way, is a stunner. Based on the
autobiographical best seller by Lothar-
Guenther Buchheim, it's an absorbing
account of a single U-boat mission in
the Atlantic in 1941, a careful depiction
of the daily life-and-death living of war-
time submariners; grimly authentic in
its shocking conclusion and refreshing-
ly devoid of Hollywood cliches, making
those deep-six submarine movies of
the past look foolishly romantic. We
live through the dull days at sea, bursts
of action, near-fatal encounters, all in
no-nonsense and universal terms and
to wholly absorbing and suspenseful
effect. And far from incidentally, the
sparse dialogue makes the English
dubbing as effective as the German
dialogue of the original.
