PEARL HARBOR:
TWO HOURS THAT
CHANGED THE WORLD
Shortly before 8 A.M. on Dec. 7, 1941, explo-
sions and gunfire rocked the Hawaiian island of
Oahu. "What are (our) letters doing, practicing on
a Sunday morning?" a sailor on the minesweeper
Oglala wondered. In fact, Japanese aircraft
launched from six carriers some 200 miles to the
north had found Pearl Harbor asleep—and left
the U.S. Pacific fleet in ruins. More than 2400
people died in the infamous two-wave assault,
nearly half of them on the battleship Arizona.
This two-hour 50th-anniversary commemora-
tion, co-produced with Japan's NHK television
network, uses archival clips, stills and interviews
to recall the event that, host David Brinkley says,
"forced the U.S. into the greatest war in history,
with its uncounted and uncountable death, debt
and misery." Little footage of the actual attack
exists, but the event—and its attendant scenes of
courage and confusion, pride and pain—still lives
in the vivid recollections of Japanese and
American eyewitnesses. "I went from being a kid
to being a very old man," says a survivor of the
USS West Virginia, "in a matter of hours."
There are also comments from President
Bush, Japanese Prime Minister Kiichi Miyazawa,
Bob Hope and others; and segments on events
leading up to Pearl Harbor, and postwar relations
between the U.S. and Japan. (2 hrs.)

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 7 8-10PM/CBS
(7-9PM Central/Mountain)
"50TH ANNIVERSARY OF PEARL HARBOR" (1991).
Fifty years, to the day, after the Japanese attack on
Pearl Harbor, this special will originate live from the
USS Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor, combining live
reporting from the scene where the attack was
launched at 7:55 a.m. on Dec. 7, 1941 — with
the most complete historical footage and photographs
available. The broadcast also brings together eyewit-
nesses to describe what happened there and leading
experts comment on how the attack changed the U.S.,
Japan and the world. Co-host is Gen. H. Norman
Schwarzkopf, the commander of the Allied forces in
the Persian Gulf War.

REMEMBER PEARL HARBOR
"I was looking at something that you only see in a mov-
ie," says former Army private Ray Perry, "yet I was
there." It was the morning of December 7, 1941, when
the surprise two-wave assault of Japanese aircraft devas-
tated the U.S. Pacific fleet at Pearl Harbor and left some
2400 dead.
The attack, devised by Adm. Isoroku Yamamoto (who
once lived in the U.S.), "was a masterpiece of planning
and execution," according to Gen. H. Norman Schwarz-
kopf (USA Ret.), who joins CBS correspondent Charles
Kuralt as co-anchor of this 50th-anniversary commemora-
tion. Co-produced with Tokyo Broadcasting System, the
retrospective blends archival film and stills with recollec-
tions by American survivors, former Japanese servicemen
and others, including Bob Hope, Walter Matthau and Eric
Sevareid. Letters and journal accounts from some who
did not survive are read by actors, including Kevin Cost-
ner, Dustin Hoffman, Paul Newman and Richard
Dreyfuss.
Also scheduled are excerpts from today's observances,
including comments from President Bush; and a visit to
the USS Arizona Memorial, which honors the nearly 1200
who died aboard the battleship. (2 hrs.)
