LIFE GOES ON BREAK A LEG, MOM 10/2/89
An episode showcasing the singing talents of Patti LuPone, a Tony winner for the musical Evita. Actually centers on Corky (Christopher Burke), for whom nothing seems to be going right. First, he has an accident in driver's ed. Moreover he is not doing well in his remedial arithmetic class, and if he doesn't pass a minimum-competency test he won't be able to stay in the mainstream program. What really gets to Corky, though, is the uneasy feeling that his mom (LuPone) gave up a promising show-business career because he came along. As it happens, Libby has a chance for a comeback of sorts, at the community college's Autumn Follies. She wants no part of it. And Corky doesn't want to take arithmetic tutoring with kids 10 years younger than himself. But they work out a deal: he'll take the tutoring if she auditions for the show. 2448. Special Preview New Series TWIN PEAKS Like every town you've ever seen. And no place you've ever known.
THE LOG'S TALE Debut. 4/8/90
There's a resident of Twin Peaks known as the Log Lady. I'm usually cradled in her arms. The Log Lady and I aren't the strangest sights to turn up since director David Lynch turned his camera on this Northwest lumber town, now that I'm a star. I'd like to recall the roots of our residency. Old Pete Marlett (Jack Nance) finds the plastic-wrapped body of a homecoming queen (Sheryl Lee) washed up on the lakeshore, setting up the central mystery of Lynch's serial drama who killed Laura Palmer? But that's not the only question to occupy the compulsively deductive mind of FBI special agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan), as indicated by his first question to Sheriff Harry S. Truman (Michael Ontkean), who assists Cooper on the case: "What kind of fantastic trees do you have growing around here?" (Repeat, 2 hrs.)

2451. GORILLAS IN THE MIST. (1988)
Sigourney Weaver's Oscar-nominated portrayal of naturalist Dian Fossey (1932-85) dominates this 1988 film, set against striking African backdrops. The drama opens in 1966 Kentucky, where physical therapist Fossey assesses a job with anthropologist Louis Leakey (Ian Cumbersson) with such persistence that he eventually gives in and sends her to Central Africa to study mountain gorillas. Her first encounter with the powerful yet shy beasts is less than cordial. Then, when National Geographic photographer Bob Campbell (Bryan Brown) arrives to make a film about Fossey, her own reaction is territorial and hostile. In time, however, the gorillas warm up to Fossey, and she warms up to Campbell. But the mountain is never a peaceful kingdom. The gorillas are threatened by poachers and zoo brokers, whose actions are outrageous to Fossey—but important to Rwanda's economy. "Your problem," the Minister of the Interior tells Fossey, "is dressing gorillas. Mine is increasing people." Rated PG-13 for strong language and violence. Directed by Michael Apted. Closed-captioned on HBO. Rot Carr, Julie Harris, Sammi Davis, John O'Meara, Mikael Van Vreden, Constantin Alexandrov. (2 hrs., 10 min.)
