Faye Dunaway and Richard Widmark star in the 1989 made-
to-cable movie, about a May-December romance that
scandalizes a Southern town at the turn of the century.
The residents of Cold Sassy, Ga., are shocked when gen-
eral-store owner E. Rucker Blanton (Widmark) marries
again—just three weeks after the death of his first wife. And
the bride, Miss Love Simpson (Dunaway), is "young enough
to be [his] daughter." To quiet the tongue-wagging town, Love
publicly announces that their marriage is strictly "in name on-
ly." She sleeps in a separate room and has agreed to cook
and clean in exchange for the deed to Blanton's house.
But when Love's ex-fiancé (Jay O. Sanders) turns up and
makes unwelcome advances, they're observed, and Love finds
herself completely shunned. Hurt and angry, Love determines
to leave again to tell in town—until changing circumstances and
a growing affection begin to melt her resolve.
