## RIGHT COLUMN
WAR-150. AN ORIGINAL WORLD PREMIERE
NORMANDY
THE GREAT CRUSADE
NARRATED BY CHARLES DURNING
5/30/94

DSC There is something
extraordinary about
Charles Durning that he can't talk
about, because when he does he be-
gins to cry. It has to do with his
heroic efforts fighting in WWII,
which include being stabbed eight
times in hand-to-hand combat with
a German soldier, being the lone
survivor in a 40-man platoon, and
other incidents that earned him
three purple hearts and a Silver Star.
He also landed on Omaha Beach
during D-day, making his latest
credit as narrator of Normandy: The
Great Crusade (May 30, 9 p.m.) all the
more poignant. The documentary is
timed to the battle's 50th anniver-
sary. "The D-day invasion changed
the history of the world," Durning
says. "Some officer said, 'There
were only two kinds of people on
this beach: those who are dead and
those who are going to be dead.'"
For Durning, narrating the docu-
mentary brought back emotional
memories. "[Writer/director]
Christopher Koch said he heard
something in my voice, sorrow or
whatever it was. I felt good about
that. I was back there in '44 and it
was a catharsis. I saw things I wish
that I hadn't seen, even though it
was a cleansing thing. I had to leave
there right away; I couldn't take it."
