Return: The acclaimed
series debuts its third
season with a portrait
of Lillian Gish, the
venerable "first lady of the silent screen."
Lillian Gish was born in Springfield, Ohio. Her
acting career began on the stage at the age of 15
in 1902, since her father was unable to support
his wife and two daughters by himself. But this is
not counted a misfortune. Lillian and her younger
sister Dorothy "grew up in a beautiful, kind, gen-
erous, unselfish world" as child actors, touring
the country in "recitals" for $10 a week.
Introduced to pioneer movie director D.W. Grif-
fith by their friend Mary Pickford, the sisters were
Gish and Richard Barthelmess taking direction
from D.W. Griffith on the set of 'Way Down East.'
ning of a long and rewarding collaboration with
Griffith that included such cinematic landmarks
as "The Birth of a Nation" (1915), "Intolerance"
(1916), "Broken Blossoms" (1919), "Way Down
East" (1920) and "Orphans of the Storm"
(1921). Gish's career soon flicker out with the si-
lent era, of course, and her distinguished work in
later films is touched on, including her perform-
ance in "The Night of the Hunter" (1955) and
1987's "The Whales of August." Eva Marie Saint narrates. (80 min.)
