Like that 1991 TV-movie, the 1993 Head of Plains drama is set principally on the Kansas prairie where, in 1912, a devastating drought plagues the four Wittings: Jacob (Walken), a resilient farmer; his loving wife Sarah (Close), a mid-order bride; and Jacob's two young children by his first marriage, Anna (Lexi Randall) and Caleb (Christopher Bell). As conditions worsen, the family suffers a calamity that marks a turning point for Sarah, who is harboring a secret from her husband. Filmed in Kansas and Maine, the drama was written by "Sarah" author Patricia MacLachlan and directed by Emmy winner Joseph Sargent ("Miss Rose White"). (2 hrs.)

A poignant piece of Americana that does the
genre of family films proud.
Set in 1910 Kansas, "Sarah, Plain and Tall" is
essentially a four-character drama that revolves
around a withdrawn, widowed father named
Jacob Witting (Christopher Walken); his children
Anna (Lexi Randall) and Caleb (Christopher
Bell), ages 9 and 6; and Sarah Wheaton (Glenn
Close), a compassionate yet feisty single woman
from Maine who responds to Jacob's advertise-
ment for "a kind woman to share a life . . . to
make a difference. No picture necessary."
Giving herself a month's trial to make that dif-
ference, Sarah finds herself battling against
Jacob's stubborn ways, Anna's uneasy resent-
ment, and the memories of wife and mother that
haunt father and daughter.
