Welles was 24, a "boy wonder" with impressive theat-
rical and radio innovations on his resume, when he
signed with RKO. His contract allowed him the con-
trol to star in, direct and
co-write a thinly disguised pro-
file of the publisher and his mis-
tress, actress Marion Davies.
What followed was "a fight so
fierce the movie was almost
destroyed before the public
