DECEIT AND INDIFFERENCE
A moving study documenting America's basic indifference
during World War II to Nazi genocide.
The program characterizes the era as a time in which
anti-Semitism was on the rise in the U.S. as well as
abroad, a phenomenon that narrator Hal Linden notes
was manifest in U.S. immigration laws that "reflected bla-
tant bias and prejudice." Recalled is the racist propagan-
da that blamed Jews for America's economic woes and
fueled fears that immigrants would exacerbate conditions.
Personalizing the plight of the refugees and their families
are moving comments from Kurt Klein, who emigrated
from Germany in 1937 and recounts his repeated at-
tempts to bring over his parents.
Klein's struggle was met with what he calls "calculated
bureaucratic delay," and the documentary details how the
U.S. deliberately hindered hundreds of thousands seeking
sanctuary. Included is evidence showing how the State
Department suppressed reports about the Holocaust, and
was, historian David Wyman says, "deeply committed to
a policy of not rescuing Jews." (1:30)

concentration camp are the subject of "Nazi
Designers of Death," which uses newly availa-
ble documents to reconstruct meetings and
plans that turned a labor camp into a facility
where some 1.1 million people were killed. In-

A superb 1983 British documentary re-
flects on the legacy and motives of WWII
German industrialist Oskar Schindler,
whose list of 1100 Jewish factory work-
ers saved them from the death camps.
Why did he do it? In a 1964 interview,
he said: "I felt the Jews were being
destroyed. I had to help them. There
was no choice."

body knows why he did it, but the
historical fact is that Oskar Schin-
dler (Liam Neeson)—a playboy,
greedy opportunist, and member
of the Nazi party—risked his own
life and bankrupted himself to save
more than 1100 Jews from Nazi
death camps. Steven Spielberg's
unforgettable, haunting story of
this chapter in Holocaust history is

838H. NIGHTMARE'S END: The Liberation
of the camps. (1994)
"Such damnable ghastliness."
Words generally can't describe the horrors of
the Holocaust, but those words—uttered by a
British chaplain who accompanied troops as they
liberated Bergen-Belsen—speak volumes. And
while archival footage (the clip of the chaplain
included) dots this 1984 British documentary
about the liberation of the Nazi death camps, it
consists mostly of the accounts of Allied libera-
tors, who recall 50-year-old atrocities as if they
had happened yesterday. "I was in total shock,"
says a German-born GI whose unit entered
Mauthausen. "I didn't know what to believe, but I
didn't want to believe this." (Following the film,
the 1983 short "You Are Free.") (1:30)
