A DIAMOND JUBILEE FOR A SHOW-BUSINESS LEGEND
Saluting the Chairman of the Board—Francis Albert Sina-
tra—who turns 75 on Dec. 12.
Co-produced by Emmy winner George Schlatter ("Sam-
my Davis Jr.'s 60th Anniversary"), the program interweaves
retrospectives, recollections and musical performances, no-
tably selections by Ol' Blue Eyes himself, taped at a concert
last week in New Jersey that kicked off his world tour.
Other highlights slated at press time include vintage clips
and stills recalling Sinatra's radio days and big-band years
in the 1930s and '40s; memorable moments from three
movies and a 1973 TV special that paired Sinatra with
Gene Kelly; scenes from his dramatic films, including "From
Here to Eternity," for which he won an Oscar in 1953; a
1960 duel with Elvis Presley that blends "Love Me Tender"
and "Witchcraft"; and a 1984 recording session with Quincy
Jones. There are also tuneful tributes by Ella Fitzgerald, Jo
Stafford, Peggy Lee, Helen Forrest, Helen O'Connell,
George Burns, the Manhattan Transfer, Jack Jones, Harry
Connick Jr., and Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme; and
warm words from Paul Newman, Barbara Streisand, Bruce
Willis, Sophia Loren and Tom Selleck.
The show is fleshed out with bittersweet reminiscences

BEGINS TONIGHT

The making of a show-business legend.
Spanning 1925-74, this two-part 1982 TV-movie charts
the highs and downs in the stormy career and personal life of
Frank Sinatra. He's portrayed by Philip Casnoff
as an ambitious and mercurial charmer who, in
his teens, rides a big-band ride to singing stardom. But it eludes
and extramarital flings and well-publicized battles with
the press.
Classic Sinatra recordings are featured on the sound-
track, including versions of "Begin the Beguine," "Without a
Song," "I'll Be Seeing You," "Where or When," "You Go to
My Head," "I Fall in Love Too Easily" and "I'm a Fool to
Want You." (Worn masters necessitated the recording of
"All or Nothing at All" and "I'll Never Smile Again" by a
Sinatra soundalike, Australian actor Tom Burlinson) (3 hrs.)

THE ULTIMATE EVENT

The trio perform separately and together in a
1988 concert at Detroit's Fox Theatre. Davis
starts off with "Hello, Detroit," followed by "With
a Song in My Heart," "The Candy Man" and
"Music of the Night." Next up, Minnelli sings "All
That Jazz," "Sailor Boys," "Ring Them Bells,"
"Mon Avant" and "Cabaret." Then Sinatra per-
forms "Where or When," "For Once in My Life,"
"Mack the Knife," "One for My Baby (And One
More for the Road)" and "My Way." The three
join forces for "Style," and conclude with "New
York, New York." (1:30)
