- INDEPENDENCE DAY
(1996)
While promoting his 1994 film "Stargate," director Roland Emmerich was asked if he believed in aliens. He said he believed in "the great 'what if.' What if... enormous spaceships hovered over every single city in the world?" Then Kamenick told partner Dean Devlin, "I think I've got our next movie." The result—this 1996 irregular pitting humankind against an alien invasion—is propelled by a hotshot fighter pilot (Will Smith) and a combative vet President (Bill Pullman), who evoke the bravura of Luke Skywalker and Han Solo. Rated PG-13 for violence, adult themes and strong language. (Leonard Jeff Goldbim) (2/25)

Venusians disguised as gorgeous babes plot to
plunder Earth of its riches in an uproarious
hourlong episode that climaxes at Super Bowl
XXXII in San Diego.
The Venusians' alluring appearance is an
integral part of their insidious plot, which they
intend to unveil at the Super Bowl half-time
show. But first, the Venusians descend on Ruth-
erford ("a petri dish of the mundane," smirks
one plotter) to gauge their appeal on a less
group. The disguises work like a charm on Ruth-
erford's shibbolest men, including his three male
aliens. Not surprisingly, Sally (Kristen John-
ton) is suspicious. Cindy Crawford guests.

The Star Trek franchise, "The X-Files," Independence Day." Their pop-
ularity shows that viewers think something is out there, and NBC
wants Saturday night to be the place to find it with two new series
designed to tap into pop culture's enduring sci-fi mania.
There are Dark Skies on the New Frontier. It's 1961, and idealistic
young Congressional aide John Loesgard (Eric Close) sees them
when he finds proof that aliens who can con-
trol human minds are among us. He also
learns that a shadowy Government agency
known as Majestic-12 is covering up the ev-
eryone. John fights back, and he and his girl-
friend Kim (Megan Ward) manage to elen
JFK. But that sends both Majestic and the aliens after them. J.T. Walsh
costars as Majestic's mysterious boss. Col. Frank Bach. (2:00)
