THE HEAT OF THE DAY
The series begins its 20th season with Harold
Pinter's adaptation of Elizabeth Bowen's psycho-
logical novel, set in World War II Britain.
At the story opens, an elderly man named
Francis Morris collapses and dies. Among those
attending his funeral is widow Stella Rooney (Pa-
tricia Hodge), a distant relative who is supposed to
learn that Morris left his estate to her son, Rod-
wick (Grant Parsons)—despite the fact that the
two men never met.
Even more puzzling is a man named Harrison
(Michael Gambon), who claims to be an old friend
of Morris's. He reveals that he knows a great deal
about Stella and her family. "I don't understand
your interest in us," Stella tells him. But she soon
learns Harrison is a counterespionage agent, and he informs
Stella that her lover, Robert (Michael York), is
"working for the enemy." (2 hrs.)
