1/8/89 TWIST OF FATE, PART 1
An intriguing variation on the theme of destiny.
In July of 1944, an SS leader (or colonel) named Hermit
von Schraeder (Bruce Greenwood) foresees the fall of the
Third Reich and the prosecution by the Allies of concen-
tration-camp administrators like himself. So to save his
neck, Von Schraeder blackmails a Nazi plastic surgeon
(Ben Cross) into drastically altering his facial fea-
tures, giving him a new identity as Jew, named Ben
Grossman, and shipping him to a camp in France that
Von Schraeder knows is about to be liberated.
But in a twist of fate, "Grossman" (now played by Ben
Cross) is transported instead to the dreaded Belsen camp
in Germany. Brutally treated, Grossman nonetheless sur-
vives and ruthlessly betrays Max Brodsky (John Gior-
ger), a Polish inmate whose dreams of an Israeli state
come to figure in Grossman's life after the war. So, too,
does Brodsky's fiancee, Deborah (Veronica Hamel).
This two-part 1989 TV-movie was filmed in Yugoslavia.

Movie: An outrageous plot and an excellent cast are the noteworthy features of
"Twist of Fate," a tortuous 1989 TV-movie tale of deception and ultimate atonement.
In Part 1, a Nazi bigwig in the waning days of WWII blackmails a plastic surgeon into
rearranging his face—so that he looks Jewish. Improbable as it may seem, the Nazi
(who now resembles Ben Cross) goes on to become one of the founders of Israel.

Movie: The conclusion of "Twist of Fate" establishes ex-Nazi Ben Grossman
(Ben Cross) as a hero of Israeli independence and then jumps forward 25 years for a
final reckoning. Ben's son, a documentary filmmaker (played by Bruce Greenwood,
who showed up last night as Ben's SS alter ego), figures out his father's secret.
Meanwhile, the slimy ODESSA types who have had their eye on Ben all these
years suddenly surface with a mission for him. The buildup takes most of four
hours, but the punchline is worth the wait. (8 PM 2) 1/9/89

Movie: Gentle humor and intense sadness suffuse "Home Fires Burning," a 1989
Hall of Fame drama about World War II on the home front. Marvellous performances
by Bernard Hughes (as a cantankerous small-town Southern newspaper editor),
Sada Thompson (as his long-suffering wife) and Robert Prosky (as his best friend)
