THE WORLD WAR II BLOCKBUSTER BEGINS 11/13/88
Debut: Launching Herman Wouk's sequel to "The Winds of
War," a 30-hour TV blitz interweaving personal dramas with re-
creations of events in Europe and the Pacific from 1941 to 1945.
Several original cast members reprise their roles, notably Rob-
ert Mitchum as U.S. Navy Capt. Victor "Pug" Henry. In Part 1,
Pug takes command of a cruiser in the wake of the Japanese at-
tack on Pearl Harbor. But Pug doesn't take the lead in the first
chapter, which revolves around Pug's son Byron (Hart
Bochner), embroiled in submarine warfare in the South China
Sea; Pug's lover Pamela (Victoria Tennant), entangled in the
Japanese invasion of the Malay States; Byron's Jewish wife Nat-
alie (Jane Seymour), trying to flee Europe and the Holocaust, and
the plight of Auschwitz inmates, dramatized in painful scenes
filmed at the actual site of the concentration camp in Poland.
The miniseries continues in six more installments this week and
next. The concluding segments (totaling 12 hours) will air later

Beginning with "The
Winds of War," launched
back in February, Herman
Wouk's spread-
ing re-creation of World
War II has consumed all 12 hours of air time
now, as the final 11/3 hours of "War and
Remembrance" wind down. Wouk's 40-hour
interview saga not spanned six years, longer
than the war itself.
Tonight's biggest picks up where last Novem-
ber's cliffhanger left off. By 1945, U.S. Navy
Capt. Victor "Pug" Henry (Robert Mitchum) is
navigating artillery waters in relationships with
his wife (Polly Bergen) and lover (Victoria Ten-
nant) in the Pacific; Pug's son, Byron (Hart
Bochner), a submarine officer, battles both the
Japanese and his own demons. His sister Natalie
(Herbert Lom) is in Auschwitz, trying to escape
the horrors of the Holocaust. Meanwhile, Byron's
brother, Alan (Robert Morley), is in London,
trying to persuade Churchill (Ralph Bellamy) to
prepare for D-Day. The miniseries continues, night by night, through
