691B. LAWRENCE OF ARABIA: (1962)
w/Peter O'Toole, Alec Guinness, Omar Sharif, Anthony Quinn, Jack Hawkins, Anthony Quayle, Claude Rains, Arthur Kennedy & Jose Ferrer.
Seven Oscars—including Best Picture—went to this spectacular 1962 biography of one of the century's most enigmatic heroes.
T.E. Lawrence was an obscure lieutenant assigned to British Army intelligence in Cairo when Britain declared war on Turkey in 1914. Two years later, he was dispatched to aid the Arab tribes under Prince Feisal in their uprising against their Ottoman overlords. In the course of his career as a leader of desert guerrillas, Lawrence would galvanize the Arab revolt, endure indignities from his Turkish captors and eventually lead his forces to a smashing victory at Damascus.
All of this is captured brilliantly by director David Lean and his cinematographer Freddie Young (both Oscar winners along with Maurice Jarre, who composed the haunting score). But what distinguishes the film is Peter O'Toole's powerful portrayal of Lawrence—a complex, self-tortured man who is both a philosopher and terrorist.
Written by Robert Bolt ("A Man for All Seasons"), the film also won Oscars for its art direction, editing and sound. Supporting Cast . . . Prince Feisal: Alec Guinness. Sherif Ali: Omar Sharif. Auda Abu Tayi: Anthony Quinn. General Allenby: Jack Hawkins. Turkish Bey: Jose Ferrer. Colonel Brighton: Anthony Quayle. Dryden: Claude Rains. Jackson Bentley: Arthur Kennedy. Murray: Donald Wolfit. Gasim: I.S. Johar. (4 hrs.)
