ERNIE KOVAC: Please Stand By.
An affectionate tribute to the comic visionary
features comments from friends and family, and
vintage clips from his various series. Kovacs
(1919-62) began in the theater, but it was during
a stint as a New Jersey DJ that his style took
shape. Switching to TV in 1951, he recognized
the potential of the medium to present visual
gags. Though Kovacs' efforts often bewildered
audiences and network executives, his work
was a precursor to shows like Laugh-In and
Monty Python's Flying Circus. As Jack Lem-
mon says, "he literally invented things that had
never been done." Also interviewed are Steve
Allen and Kovacs' widow, Edie Adams. (1.00)
