AMERICA'S FUNNIEST HOME VIDEOS
This weekly half hour (Sundays at 8 P.M. [ET] on ABC) brings new meaning to the phrase "low budget," yet it abooks up 60 minutes and is taking a big bite out of Murder, She Wrote. Why are millions tuning in to watch babies drool and grown-ups fall out of hammocks? Perhaps partly because home-video making is a tremendously popular pastime and partly because the show taps into an appeal as old as art itself: an irresistible slapstick. It's odd that physical comedians have disappeared when we all still take such joy in watching some poor dope walk into a tree or lose his pants. But the misadventures shown in these snippets of home videotape will do until Laurel and Hardy come back. There's a lot of deliberate clowning in those tapes, but the best clips are of unpredictable accidents and pratfalls that happened to occur while the camera was rolling on some domestic scene or other. A happy groom picks up his bride--and they both fall over. A home-owner leaps onto his diving board, which breaks and dumps him into the pool. A back-yard touch-football game ends when the runner hits a fence and the fence collapses. Some of these moments are falling-down funny, mostly because the victims are genuinely surprised and often because they're getting a just comeuppance. The three guys who showed off for the camera by walking around on a frozen swimming pool were asking for a cold bath--and got one. The tapes are introduced by host Bob TV GUIDE APRIL 14, 1990
