VIVA ZAPATA! Marlon Brando's virtuoso performance keys director Elia Kazan's idealized 1952 biography of the Mexican revolutionary leader. Emiliano Zapata (1877-1919) was something of a Mexican Robin Hood in the areas of the country he controlled during the 1909-1919 revolution, but his brutal side was softpedaled by Kazan, producer Darryl F. Zanuck and screenwriter John Steinbeck. Instead, Brando's Zapata is a simple and anguished man of the people, who is destined to free them from harsh dictator Porfirio Diaz (Fay Roop). Diaz is eventually overthrown, but conditions don't improve under his successor, Francisco Madero (Harold Gordon), and again Zapata must fight. Steinbeck and Brando both earned Oscar nominations, and Anthony Quinn won one as Zapata's hard-drinking, womanizing brother, Eufemio. (2 hrs., 30 min.) Marlon Brando's virtuoso performance keys
director Elia Kazan's idealized 1952 biogra-
phy of the Mexican revolutionary leader.
Emiliano Zapata (1877-1919) was some-
thing of a Mexican Robin Hood in the areas
of the country he controlled during the 1909-
1919 revolution, but his brutal side was soft-
pedaled by Kazan, producer Darryl F. Za-
nuck and screenwriter John Steinbeck. In-
stead, Brando's Zapata is a simple and an-
guished man of the people, who is destined
to free them from harsh dictator Porfirio Diaz
(Fay Roop). Diaz is eventually overthrown,
but conditions don't improve under his
successor, Francisco Madero (Harold Gor-
don), and again Zapata must fight.
Steinbeck and Brando both earned Oscar
nominations, and Anthony Quinn won one
as Zapata's hard-drinking, womanizing
brother, Eufemio. (2 hrs., 30 min.)
