Part 1 opens at the end of the war and entwines the destinies of four central figures: Madeline Main (Lesley-Anne Down), a South Carolina belle fallen on hard times; George Hazard (James Read), a Pennsylvania industrialist drawn to Madeline, an old family friend; Madeline's cousin Charles (Kyle Chandler), a dashing, wayward Army NCO; and Elkanah Bent (Philip Casnoff), a vengeful sadist who's stalking the Hazards and the Mains.
