up its heels with Vanishing Son, a martial-
arts drama about a Chinese political
dissident (Russell Wong) who flees to
California, where he receives ample
opportunity to display his diverse talents
(he's a violinist as well as a kicker and
chopper). Oscar winner Haing S. Ngor
("The Killing Fields") has a cameo as a
Vietnamese drug kingpin. -8 PM 14

one Action Packed appearance, but
tonight the 1994 martial-arts drama Van-
ishing Son II returns with a ★ first-run
outing that finds hero Jian Wa (Russell
Wong) kicking up his heels in Louisiana,
where trouble is brewing between Amer-
ican and Vietnamese fishermen. Dean

Russell Wong, whose syn-
dicated Vanishing Son de-
buts Jan. 16, may be the first
Asian-American with his own
drama series, but he shrugs at the
status. "I have my own show, and
that's great," he says. "I have
my own standards; if peo-
ple place an extra burden
on me because I'm Asian,
that's their thing." The
martial arts-trained actor plays a Chinese fugitive who
shares his Taoist philosophy and kicks a little butt as he
seeks his brother's killer ("The Killing Fields" Oscar winner
Haing S. Ngor). Sound familiar? "Vanishing Son is not Kung
Fu," Wong says emphatically as he lists the differ-
ences—not the least of which is that the lead char-
acter is actually Chinese, and the kung fu is real."
