1314. Mississippi Burning (1988)
MISSISSIPPI BURNING
Gene Hackman and William Dafoe play FBI
agents battling rednecks. Klansmen and one
another in a fictionalized account of the investi-
gation into the June 1964 murders of three civil-
rights workers in Mississippi.
As the 1988 film opens, the three are missing,
and the local sheriff tells agents Ward and An-
derson (Dafoe and Hackman, pictured) that the
activists had been in his jail the day they disap-
peared, but were released that night.
While young, starchy, by-the-book Ward tries
to poke holes in the sheriff's story, the veteran
Anderson, himself a former Mississippi sheriff,
doesn't because "if a sheriff in a little town like
this says that's what happened, that's what hap-
pened." They have other differences. Ward ad-
mires those who believe that "some things are
worth dying for." Anderson snaps back: "Some
people down here feel some things are worth kill-
ing for!" And he thinks some rules are meant to
be broken, if it helps solve the case.
Rated R for violence and strong language, the
film won an Oscar for cinematography and gar-
nered six more nominations, including Best Pic-
ture. Director (Alan Parker) and Actor (Hack-
man). (2 hrs., 10 min.)

1317. HEAT WAVE (Watts) 8/13/90
HEAT WAVE
Rage erupts in this 1990 made-for-cable movie based on
a Los Angeles Times reporter's experiences during the
August 1965 riot in Los Angeles' Watts area.
After moving to California in search of opportunity, Bob-
by Richardson (Blair Underwood) finds his dreams are
"close enough to see but not close enough to touch." The
only job open to an aspiring black journalist is as a Times
messenger, but Bobby hopes to one day break into the
ranks of the all-white reporting staff. That day comes
sooner than expected when a routine arrest in Bobby's
tension-filled neighborhood sparks a full-scale uprising.
Directed by Kevin Hooks. (2 hrs.)
