A TALE OF TWO CITIES, PART 1
This four-part adaptation of Charles Dickens'
1859 classic is doubly appropriate during this
bicentennial of the French Revolution. It is itself a
tale of two cities, a co-production of Granada
Television of London and Oune of Paris.
Part 1 opens in 1775, as Dr. Manette (Jean-
Pierre Aumont) is released from the Bastille after
18 years of captivity. Escorting Manette's daugh-
ter Lucie (Serena Gordon) to Paris, to meet the
father she thought had died long ago, is Jarvis
Lorry (John Mills), the family banker. Her duty,
Lorry tells her, is "to restore him, comfort him,
love him."
Five years later in London, a Frenchman
named Charles Darnay (Xavier Deluc) is on trial
for treason. While Lucie excels his character on
the witness stand, it is the defense lawyer's as-
sistant, Sydney Carton (Liam Neeson), who turns
the tide of the proceedings. Eyewitness accounts
of Darnay's treachery become immediately sus-
pect when attention is brought to an uncanny
resemblance between Carton and Darnay.
Defence: Gerard Klein; Madame Defarge:
Kathia Knecht; Marquis St. Evremonde: Jean-
Marc Bory; Stryver: Jonathan Adams. Drama-
tized by Arthur Hopcroft ("Black House"). Direct-
ed by Philippe Monnier (60 min.)
Jean-Pierre Aumont and Serena Gordon
