source material a re-
markable collection
of photographs as-
sembled by New York textile merchant
Frederick Hill Meserve.
Meserve was born in 1865—the same
year Lincoln was assassinated. The son
of a Union officer in the Civil War, he
grew up determined to fill out his father's

The only family mem-
ber with whom
Lincoln was ever
formally photo-
graphed was
his son Tad.

After the disastrous battle of Antietam, Lincoln had
a showdown with then-Union Army commander
Gen. George B. McClellan (facing Lincoln)

reminiscences of the conflict
and of the President who
was perhaps its ultimate
casualty.
In 1897, Meserve
bought his first pho-
tographs, paying
$1.10 at auction
(worth around
$19 today) for a
brown-paper bun-
dle of about 100
pictures—many
by celebrated 19th-
century photogra-
pher Mathew Brady.
Lincoln always scowr-
screntin because in the early
days of photography, subjects
had to sit still for a minute.

tographer.
Meserve became the
country's first great col-
lector of photographs—
he searched endless
secondhand stores,
visited auction room
after auction room,
browsed family
albums and scoured
warehouses as he
found, assembled,
and preserved for the
nation a visual history
of Lincoln and his
times. Immediately after
the Civil War, many pho-
tographs were discarded as
America tried to forget. But
