TREASURE IS TROUBLE 3/21/88 (Series) 3/21/88
Out: Archaeologists and adventurers search
the world's lakes and seas, uncovering riches
from ancient civilizations, in this eight-part series.
And in the opener, archaeology and adventure
collide. Treasure salvor Mel Fisher has found
over $170 million in "booty" in his 10-year quest
for the "mother lode" of a Spanish galleon that
sank in 1622 off the Florida Keys. Privately fund-
ed, Fisher pays off his costs by dividing the
treasures among employees and investors who
say they're "buying a small piece of history."
Across the Atlantic, Richard Lam "hoovers up
coins" from the Admiral Gardiner, a ship that
sank in 1809 off the south coast of England.
Although Fisher and Lam now employ full-time
archaeologists to ensure proper documentation
and preservation of invaluable historical informa-
tion, many archaeologists believe that treasure
hunting is simply profiteering. Says the Univer-
sity of South Carolina's Alan B. Albrig: "A clash
of values exists as to whether the material is
worth something historically, for the benefit of
the Nation . . . versus the benefit of private in-
dividuals." (60 min.)

Dreams of Gold: The Mel Fisher Story,

ertson as the "raggedy dreamer" who
spent 17 years hunting a sunken Spanish
galleon that he found in 1985 with a treas-
ure estimated at some $400 million. The
movie covers the years of diving, money-
grubbing, litigation, tragedy and triumph.
Robertson plays the chicken-farmer-

Swit is his ever-smiling, ever-gung-ho
wife.

Wood on the Congo; and feminist Germaine
