A heartwarming four-part Canadian dramatization of Lucy Maud Montgomery's classic tale about an orphan who finds a place she can call home. As the story opens, the brusque Marilla Cuthbert (Colleen Dewhurst) and her shy brother Matthew (Richard Farnsworth) have decided to adopt an orphan boy who's "old enough to do the chores and young enough to be brought up properly." But when Matthew goes to the station to pick up the boy he finds a girl: Anne Shirley (Megan Follows), a scrawny redhead with an imagination that never stops and a tongue to match. Marilla concludes that "she's no good to us," but Matthew takes a liking to Anne and believes that "we might be of some good to her." So Anne and the Cuthberts agree to "put it on trial for a while." Living at Green Gables would be the answer to Anne's prayers, but try as she might, the 13-year-old can't seem to control her hair-trigger temper or her penchant for getting into trouble.
