- SISTER WENDY'S STORY OF PAINTING
9/7/97
(Sun., PBS) "Art changes, but it doesn't get better." As Sister Wendy Beckett utters this bon mot, she's standing in full habit before a Lascaux cave painting of bison, which she describes as "black balls of male erotic fury." Sister Wendy's a giggle, but her ability to summarize art in simple language has made her Britain's most popular art critic. The first part of the five-hour Story takes us from Lascaux, home of "our small, hairy ancestors," to Hieronymus Bosch's grotesques. I expected to be enchanted, and I was. My score (0-10): 8 9/7/97
