End of the world, Stephen King-style. The Stand This four-volume ABC miniseries from terrormeister Stephen King is nothing if not ambitious. After a deadly virus kills off nearly everyone in the country, there's a doomsday battle between the forces of good and evil. Symbols abound: There's the prophetlike Mother Abagail (Ruby Dee); there's the Dark Man, a devil in human form (Jamey Sheridan); there's a deaf-mute good guy (Rob Lowe). There's even a dog named Kojak. The Stand was a huge hit on television. But it is six hours long, and probably best taken in small doses over several sittings. King's adaptation is more faithful to his novel than Stanley Kubrick's 1980 film, and the horrormeister consistently delivers on his promise of "a scary ride" without sacrificing on characterization. In Part I, Jack Torrance (Steven Weber), a struggling writer and violent alcoholic, takes his wife (Rebecca De Mornay) and their clairvoyant son (Courtland Mead) to a sinister Colorado hotel. He's been hired as the property's winter caretaker, and for seven long months the Torrances will be the only people at the snowbound resort.

Once in custody, Linoge vaguely accounts for his presence: "Give me what I want and I'll go away." Molly: Debrah Farentino. Hutch: Casey Siemaszko.
